Basic Procedures on International Pet Relocation to Greece
Like most EU countries, Greece has standards to guarantee the safety of pets and its people. Here’s what you need to know to successfully relocate your pet to Greece:
- Microchipping: The First Step
All pets relocating to Greece must have their microchip with an ISO compatible chip before any vaccinations can be administered. This helps to avoid misleading customers and also to ensure compliance with the EU regulations. In EU countries, microchipping must be done before vaccinating rabies.
- Rabies Vaccination and other approved vaccines generally.
All pets that plan to travel to Greece must be vaccinated for rabies. It needs to be done at least three weeks before the travel date, but not earlier than after microchipping. However, a new vaccination will attract a 21-day waiting period if the prior vaccination has expired.
Furthermore, booster shots: have to be updated. Other vaccinations are recommended for added safety:
- Dogs: Distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, Bordetella.
- Cats: Calicivirus, herpesvirus and panleucopenia, leukemia and others.
- Rabies Titre Test
The rabies antibody test (FAVN) is required when transferring your furry friend from India to Greece. This test assures that adequate levels of rabies antibodies have been developed and should be done not earlier than thirty days following the rabies vaccination. Pets can only enter Greece in which the minimum time frame they should stay is three months from the blood sample date in order to meet the requirements of the EU laws and no quarantine is required if they are coming from another EU country.
- Tapeworm Treatment (Solely for Dogs)
Dogs must undergo a tapeworm treatment 1-5 days before travelling to Greece. This measure, in fact, is equally important in promoting the wellbeing of pets in Greece.
- Documentation Requirements
To ensure a hassle-free relocation, several documents are required:
- Updated vaccination records
- Rabies titre test report
- Recent photos of your pet
- Export certificate or pet passport
- The passport of the Owner, visa if any to the country of destination, and flight confirmation.
Pets Can Fly manages all documentation thoroughly to meet the standard of Greek and EU regulation(EU countries).

Pets can accompany their owners to Greece as hand carried goods, checked baggage or in the hold of the airplane provided by the Airlines’ regulations of size, weight, and breed of the pet animal.
